The human rights organization SOS Balkanroute has accused Austria of constructing a detention center for refugees in Bosnia. The organization released a statement on April 11, 2023, expressing concerns over the alleged human rights violations occurring at the facility.
The statement alleges that the detention center, located in the Lipa camp, is surrounded by a high fence and is guarded by armed personnel. It also claims that refugees held at the center are subjected to inhumane conditions, including lack of access to basic necessities such as food, water, and medical care.
The allegations come after Austria's acquittal in July of Petar Rosandic, the founder of SOS Balkanroute, on charges of human smuggling. Rosandic and his organization have since continued to advocate for the rights of refugees and migrants in the region.
