Porzingis, Smart, and Jones Traded in Blockbuster Deal

Celtics Acquire Star Center in Three-Team Trade

February 10, 2022 at 4:26 PM ET, 4 min read

With less than 30 minutes remaining before Thursday's 3 PM trade deadline, the Washington Wizards have agreed to trade star center Kristaps Porzingis to the Boston Celtics as part of a three-way deal that also involves the Memphis Grizzlies. In exchange for Porzingis and a second-round pick, the Wizards will acquire Spencer Dinwiddie from the Mavericks.

The Celtics have been in need of a frontcourt presence to complement Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, and Porzingis fills that void nicely. The 7-foot-3 Latvian averaged 19.2 points and 8.7 rebounds per game for the Wizards this season.

Smart is a tough-nosed defender who provides the Celtics with another ball-handling option. He is averaging 11.6 points and 6.5 assists per game this season.

Jones, a former first-round pick of the Minnesota Timberwolves, is a solid backup point guard who can provide the Celtics with some depth at that position. He is averaging 8.6 points and 3.9 assists per game this season.

The Grizzlies are receiving Gorgui Dieng, Delon Wright, and a first-round pick in the deal. Dieng is a veteran center who can provide some depth behind Jaren Jackson Jr., while Wright is a versatile guard who can play both point guard and shooting guard. The first-round pick will give the Grizzlies another asset to add to their young core.
